Environmental Science graduates in Telangana are facing a peculiar predicament. Despite possessing a Master's degree in Environmental Science, which covers a significant portion of the syllabus for the Assistant Environment Engineer (AEE) recruitment exam, they are excluded from the recruitment process due to a lack of engineering degrees. This exclusion has sparked a debate and calls for a reevaluation of the eligibility criteria.
The Telangana Public Service Commission (TGPSC) recently notified the recruitment for 19 AEE posts in the Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TGPCB). The eligibility criteria specified a Bachelor's degree in specific engineering disciplines or a B.Tech./B.E. in any branch, along with a postgraduate degree in environmental engineering. This has left Environmental Science graduates feeling marginalized, as their specialized knowledge is not being recognized.
What makes this situation even more intriguing is the comparison with other recruitment processes. The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board allowed relevant postgraduate candidates for Assistant Environmental Officer posts in 2018. Similarly, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) under the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change reserved posts for both engineering graduates and postgraduate degree holders in 2022. These instances raise questions about the fairness and consistency of the eligibility criteria.
Environmental Science graduates argue that their Master's degree equips them with a comprehensive understanding of the syllabus, covering areas such as ecosystems, natural resources, biodiversity, and pollution control technologies. They claim that their expertise is highly relevant to the role of Assistant Environment Engineer. The fact that several M.Sc. graduates are already working as environmental engineers under the State's Municipal Administration Department further highlights the practical value of their qualifications.
The candidates have made their voices heard through representations to the Telangana Planning Board Vice-Chairman and the Special Chief Secretary. However, their appeals have not yet yielded any concrete changes to the eligibility criteria. With the application deadline approaching on July 17, the Environmental Science graduates are left with a sense of injustice and a growing call for reform. The question remains: Will their voices be heard and their qualifications recognized in time for the upcoming recruitment process?
